How to Repair a Damaged PDF

Choose the PDF that does not open, shows an error or has blank pages.
Click "Repair PDF". The file is checked, repaired and downloaded, and a short report tells you what was wrong.

What can be repaired

Damaged file structure – A PDF has an index (the cross-reference table) that tells a reader where every page and image is stored. When it is wrong or missing, readers report the file as damaged. The index is rebuilt from the file itself, and nothing else changes.
Extra data before the PDF – Some e-mail systems and download tools put text in front of the PDF data. It is removed.
Incomplete downloads – Everything that is still in the file is saved into a new, valid PDF. Pages, images or fonts that were stored in the missing part cannot be brought back.
Damaged page content – Pages are redrawn from everything that can still be read, so the file opens in every reader.

Limits

Data that is no longer in the file cannot be restored. If the file was cut off, try downloading or copying the original again.
When pages have to be redrawn, form fields become part of the page and a digital signature is no longer valid.
Files that need a password to open must be unlocked first with Unlock PDF.
A file that is not a PDF at all, such as a Word file renamed to .pdf, cannot be repaired here.

Why does my PDF say "file is damaged and could not be repaired"?

Yes, when only the file structure was damaged: text, links, form fields and bookmarks are kept. When page content was damaged, the pages are redrawn and damaged parts may be missing.

What if my PDF has no damage?

The report says so and you get your original file back unchanged.
