Make a Faded PDF Readable
Old copies, thermal receipts and light toner scans often have pale grey text on a grey background. Raising contrast and setting the darkest and lightest tones makes the text stand out again – as long as it is still visible in the scan.
How to Darken a Faded Scan
- Open Enhance PDF Add the faded document; the preview shows every change immediately.
- Raise Contrast and Blacks Contrast spreads the tones; lowering Blacks makes grey text darker.
- Clean the background Raise Whites or Brightness until the paper looks white. Histogram EQ or CLAHE can help with uneven fading.
- Try black and white For text-only pages, the Threshold slider turns everything into pure black and white – often the clearest result.

Why is my scan so light?
Faded originals, low toner or a scanner set too bright. If you still have the paper, scanning again with a darker setting gives the best result.
What is the difference between Black & White and Threshold?
The "Black & White" preset converts the page to grayscale. The Threshold slider goes further and makes every pixel either black or white.
Can it fix thermal receipts?
Often, if the print is still faintly visible. Use Contrast, Blacks and Threshold, and check the numbers carefully.
Will this change the colours of stamps and signatures?
Grayscale and Threshold remove colour. Leave them off and use "Preserve Colors" if coloured stamps must stay visible.
