Fix Bad OCR Text in a PDF

Some PDFs look fine but behave badly: search finds nothing or the wrong words, and copied text comes out as nonsense. Often the file was run through a weak OCR program when it was scanned, or the fonts in the PDF are missing the information that maps shapes to letters. OCR PDF can replace the old text layer or read the pages again from their images.

How to Fix the Text of a PDF

  1. Find out which problem you have Select a few words and paste them into a text editor. Wrong but readable words point to bad OCR; random symbols point to a font problem.
  2. Upload the PDF to OCR PDF Open OCR PDF with the button above and choose the file.
  3. Choose the mode For an old, poor OCR layer keep "Automatic" – it replaces that hidden text. For gibberish from fonts choose "Force", which reads every page again from its image.
  4. Check the result Download the PDF, search for a few words and copy a paragraph to confirm the new text.

Two Causes, Two Fixes

Old OCR layer replaced

"Automatic" detects hidden text that a previous OCR program added, removes it and recognizes the page again with a current engine.

Real text kept

Text that was typed into the document is not touched in "Automatic" mode; only image content and old OCR text are redone.

Broken fonts

If copying gives symbols like "ÿþ" or boxes, the font has no proper character map. "Force" turns each page into an image and recognizes all of it.

What "Force" costs

With "Force", real text becomes part of the page image and is replaced by recognized text, so links and selectable original text are lost. Use it only when needed.

Better input, better text

Pale, noisy or skewed scans give poor OCR in any program. Clean up the scan first, then run OCR.

Right languages

Choose every language that appears in the document. A missing language is one of the most common reasons for wrong OCR words.

Good to Know

  • OCR is never perfect. Even a good result can confuse 0 and O, 1 and l, or rn and m – check names, numbers and amounts.
  • If copying is blocked rather than wrong, the PDF has permission restrictions – use Unlock PDF instead.

Fixing Bad OCR – Frequently Asked Questions

Why does copied text from my PDF look like gibberish?

Either the hidden OCR text is poor, or the PDF fonts do not map shapes to real letters. Re-running OCR fixes the first; "Force" mode fixes the second.

Will the page look different after re-OCR?

In "Automatic" mode, no – only the invisible text changes. In "Force" mode, pages are kept as images, which looks the same but text is no longer original.

Can it fix one wrong word by hand?

No. OCR PDF recognizes pages again; it does not offer manual text correction.

Why is search still wrong after OCR?

Check the languages and the scan quality. Low resolution, heavy compression and handwriting lead to errors.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free, without sign-up or watermark, and files are deleted after processing.
